My husband was so worried, but I was full of drugs

Where did you give birth or where was the birth you witnessed?
London

Can you describe where your/the birth was?

St Thomas’s hospital. We didn’t live that near, but I had miscarried twice & wanted a birth there

Who was present at your/the birth?
Husband and midwife, then anaesthetist and doctor

Can you describe the experience of giving birth or watching the birth?
My waters broke at 5 am and we had a beautiful drive across London at dawn. We were in the labour ward quite fast, and we had brought music. But it went on for hours and the music went round and round. My cervix wasn’t dilating enough and I didn’t know how to help except to think hard of it opening. I could see the staff were worried and suddenly we were pelting down a corridor to the operating theatre. My husband was so worried but I was full of drugs and was joking with the anaesthetist about his ‘handbag’ – a bag of something that hung off a drip-stand. There was a little curtain so I couldn’t see them cut me, and then suddenly there was a squirming red-headed baby with a beautiful wide mouth in my arms. The doctor told me her stitching was beautiful, but I didn’t look.
